NWCA is the Native American/Indigenous Academy of Arts & Letters--a professional organization of writers designed to network, advocate, and celebrate great work. It was founded in 1992 through the hard work of Geary Hobson, Joseph Bruchac, Maurice Kenny, Howard Meredith, Jeannette Armstrong, Dorothy Thorsen, Robert Perry, Robert J. Conley, and D.L. Birchfield following the first Returning the Gift Conference.

Participation in NWCA is restricted to past award winners, NWCA staff, and voting members expressly invited by NWCA administration. If you are a professional Native American/Indigenous writer or an established non-Native scholar of Native literature who would like to be considered as a voting member, you may contact us for consideration.

Our programming is offered to specific Indigenous communities as well as being available for all interested individuals. Contact us for more information about how we can contribute or collaborate in your area.
